140 Covid-19 Cases Linked To Klang Valley Shopping Malls This Month
Selangor’s biggest contributor of Covid-19 cases is linked to a Petaling Jaya shopping mall.

A total of 140 Covid-19 cases so far have been linked to several shopping malls in Klang Valley in October alone as the nation is hit by a third wave of infections.
The scare began at the end of September when 6 malls reported Covid-19 cases over the course of the weekend, including Nu Sentral, KLCC and Sunway Pyramid.
Biggest Covid-19 cases in Selangor is linked to a Petaling Jaya shopping mall
Utama cluster, named after the 1 Utama shopping mall in Bandar Utama, is the biggest contributor to new Covid-19 cases in Selangor this October with a total of 135 cases.
The index case has been identified as a security guard working at the mall (Case 15,023) who reported symptoms on 22 September but only confirmed with Covid-19 on 8 October.
A majority of this cluster’s cases involve security guards (87) and cleaners (18) who work at the mall, followed by 16 staff members of several outlets in the mall.
Six mall patrons and five of their family members have also tested positive for the coronavirus.
The Utama cluster has also spread from Selangor to one infection in Melaka.
Other Klang Valley malls linked to Covid-19 cases this October
- The Curve in Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya (16 October) – an employee at the shoe store Foot Solutions tested positive for the virus. All other staff members have been tested and put under immediate 14-day quarantine.
- Tesco Extra, Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya (14 October) – an intern at the store tested positive. He was last seen at the apparel section on 11th October. The store was disinfected and reopened the next day.
- Bangsar Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur (11 October) – The mall temporarily closed for a day of disinfection and sanitisation after a staff member at an outlet tested positive for Covid-19. The staff was asymptomatic and was last physically present in the mall on 6 October.
- 3 Damansara Shopping Mall, Petaling Jaya (11 October) – A security personnel at the mall’s fire command centre tested positive after a household member also tested positive for Covid-19. Close contact employees were tested and underwent 14-day mandatory quarantine.
- Setia City Mall, Shah Alam (8 October) – A gym member at the mall’s Fitness First outlet was Covid-19 positive. The patron had last visited the gym on 2 October. The Fitness First staff member on duty at that time underwent Covid-19 testing and observed a 14-day self-quarantine.
Special mention: Mid Valley Megamall & The Gardens Mall
After a Covid-19 scare on 10 Oct when a senior staff linked to beauty shops at Mid Valley Megamall and The Gardens Mall had tested positive, it later turned out to be a false positive test result.
The staff tested negative in two rounds of Covid-19 tests and discharged from Hospital Sungai Buloh.
