Covid-19 In Sabah: Young, Free Of Chronic Illness & In ICU Battling For Their Lives

A hospital in Sabah worryingly revealed that some of their Covid-19 patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are young with no history of chronic illness.
What you need to know: The Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK) in Sandakan, Sabah is currently treating 27 Covid-19 patients in its ICU ward where some patients battling the coronavirus are below 50 years and previously healthy.
Who said what: Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK) Director Dr Francis Paul told Bernama that a majority of Covid-19 patients who require ventilators are usually above 60 years old with a medical history of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart and lung diseases. But the hospital is witnessing a peculiarly high number of young and healthy patients admitted to the ICU after getting infected with the virus. “This goes to show that this virus should not be taken lightly as it could infect anyone,” said Dr Francis.
Why it matters: Sandakan is currently a red zone with growing Covid-19 infections, and the increasing number of patients requiring ventilators and intensive care is putting increasing pressure on the medical resources available. HDOK also treats Covid-19 patients from neighbouring districts Beluran, Kinabatangan, Telupid and Tongod but only has 100 beds available. On 13 October, Sabah reported 443 new Covid-19 cases.
