Primary School Students Allowed To Wear Face Shields Instead Of Face Masks

Primary school students are now allowed to use face shields instead of face masks when attending school.
What you need to know: Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that to reduce the financial burden on the poorer members of society, primary school students are now allowed to use face shields instead of masks.
Noting that a family of five children would have to spend RM5 per day to buy masks, he said face shields, on the other hand, cost around RM3 to RM5 each and can be used for several months, unlike daily disposable face masks.
Ismail Sabri added that the government encourages the use of both if the parents could afford it.
Why it matters: After the government decided to make the use of face masks mandatory, poorer members of society struggled to ensure their children had clean face masks to use on a daily basis while attending school.Â
Many resorted to reusing their daily disposable masks or even collecting used ones from garbage bins. Which meant that instead of protecting them from Covid-19, the rule further exposed them to the infection.Â
What’s next: The Health Ministry will come up with a guideline for parents on how to wash and care for face shields.
How it got here: Ismail Sabri announced during his bi-weekly Covid-19 press conference that the government received complaints and requests from parents who cannot afford RM1 three-ply face masks.
