No More Summons, It’s Now Straight To Court For Those Caught Using Phones While Driving, Says PDRM

Malaysians caught using mobile phones while driving will now be brought to court.
According to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), as Malaysians continue to ignore the dangers of using mobile phones while on the road, starting July 6, 2020, it is now considered a non-compoundable offense under Rule 17A, LN166/59 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.
Those caught in the act can be punished with a fine of up to RM2,000, 3 to 6-months jail time, or both.
This means that instead of having to just pay a simple saman, offenders would now have to appear in court to settle their case.
Reportedly, PDRM identified 3 main causes of road accidents in Malaysia being; bad driving attitude, being tired and fatigue as well as using phones while driving.
A study published by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) revealed that Malaysians are very much inclined to use their mobile phones on the road, especially at traffic stops and during traffic jams.
