Covid-19: Two New Clusters Detected In Perak & Putrajaya

One cluster has even spread to Penang.

The Health Ministry has confirmed the emergence of two new Covid-19 clusters in Perak and Putrajaya respectively on Sunday, 9 August.

Kurau Cluster – Perak & Penang

Kurau Cluster, which emerged from Kinta in Perak also involves an infection in Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang.

The first case in this cluster (Case 9,050) was reported on 7 August, while the second case (Case 9,082) is the brother-in-law of the first who was detected via active case detection on 9 August.

Following the Covid-19 positive result, the patient’s entire family was screened for the virus and all 5 tests came back negative.

As of 9 August, the cluster has two cases while testing on 115 individuals revealed 106 negative results with 6 pending.

The Health Ministry confirms that active case detection and screening of patients’ close contacts are currently underway.

Meranti Cluster – Putrajaya

This cluster emerged when a healthcare worker (Case 9,083) tested positive for the virus on 8 August. 

This patient had been a close contact to (Case 8,968) who was found Covid-19 positive on 31 July during a pre-operation screening in Selangor

Following investigations, it was revealed that Case 8,968 received treatment at the healthcare facility where Case 9,083 was on duty.

The Health Ministry states they are still investigating the source of the infection and active case detection is underway.

As of 9 August, 15 individuals have been screened.

The emergence of these two new clusters make it a total of 25 active Covid-19 clusters in Malaysia with 174 patients.

Sunday also saw the addition of 13 new infections, whereby four are local transmissions.
