Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has ordered the immediate closure of a surau and a religious school in Section 23 because a member of the congregation was identified as a close contact to a patient from the Sivagangga cluster.

What you need to know: JAIS director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the Surau Al-Jannah will not be allowed to hold the fardhu prayer and Friday prayer as well as other religious activities to contain possible spread of Covid-19 among the congregation.

The surau and school will also have to be sanitised at once and the surau committee has been ordered to monitor the situation closely.

The surau and nearby Sekolah KAFA Al-Jannah will have to wait for JAIS to give them the green light before they can operate again.

Why it matters: Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah believes the Covid-19 virus strain from the Sivagangga cluster to be a super spreader, considering the speed of infection transmission we’ve seen so far.

Today, the cluster had reportedly spread outside of Kedah to infect people in Perlis and Penang.

Who said what: Mohd Shahzihan is advising the local community not to panic over the closure of the surau and school, as it is a normal procedure to prevent the spread of the disease.

How it got here: The cluster began after a nasi kandar restaurant owner breached his home quarantine order to visit his shop. This resulted in several of his employees, including his son, becoming infected. They then infected others.

A total of 3,246 people from this cluster had been screened on Thursday, of which 43 have tested positive. Meanwhile, 883 are still awaiting their results and the rest have been confirmed to be negative.
