The Malaysian Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) said the ceiling price of face masks may be reduced further, depending on the nation’s supply of the product.

Considering the recent retail prices drop of disposable, medical-grade three-ply face masks from RM1.50 to RM1.20, per piece. KPDNHEP will be further monitoring the market to determine the appropriate price for the personal protective equipment (PPE).

With the mandatory mask rule in public areas coming to full effect in August 2020, KPDNHEP assured the public that there would be no supply problems and shortage of face masks in the market, this time around.

During the height of the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, demand for face masks skyrocketed as global and domestic supplies dwindled.

This resulted in the government enforcing a ban on the export of face masks out of the country under the Control of Supplies (Prohibition on Exports) Regulations 2020 to curb shortages.

Additionally KPDNHEP added that the public can opt for reusable fabric face masks as an alternative.
