Nasi Kandar Eatery-Linked Covid-19 Cluster In Kedah Explodes To Second Generation, Infects Schoolchildren

When the Health Ministry confirmed the PUI Sivagangga Cluster on 28 July, Malaysians were horrified to learn that it stemmed from a nasi kandar shop owner (Case 8937) who did not follow the mandatory 14-day Home Surveillance Order (HSO) self-quarantine and went to visit the eatery instead.
As authorities call for patrons who dined at the Jitra, Kedah restaurant between 13 -24 July to undergo Covid-19 testing, it appears that the cluster has spread to the second generation of infection.
The Health Ministry confirmed on 2 August that the PUI Sivagangga Cluster that began as an import case has now become a community infection.
After the wife (Case 8983) of a positive restaurant customer (Case 8976) was confirmed as the cluster’s first second generation infection on 1 August, the figure ballooned to a whopping 11 new second generation Covid-19 infections the very next day.

According to the Health Ministry the cluster now has grown to infect 19 individuals in the community.
The new infections include four children, two two-year old toddlers and two schoolchildren aged 7 and 10 years old.
The Ministry also shares that it has tested 313 individuals as of 2 August, of which 280 tests came back negative and the results of 13 tests are still pending.
