Malaysia’s favourite runaway Jho Low is reportedly hiding in Macau under the alleged protection of the Chinese government.
What you need to know: Efforts to bring Jho Low (real name Low Taek Jho) back to Malaysia has been an ongoing ordeal. He is known globally as “the billion dollar whale” for being the mastermind behind the 1MDB financial scandal. Now, he is believed to be hiding in Macau, buying properties using funds siphoned from Malaysian coffers.
Who said what: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador also raised his concern that the Chinese government is being insincere in the joint operation to extradite Jho Low, leading to the long delayed process. He said that so far, there hasn’t been any convincing responses from the republic.
However, Abdul Hamid also assured that police intelligence has been closely tracking Jho Low’s movements and are aided by several foreign agencies.
Why it matters: 1MDB is one of the largest scandals the country has faced, involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who has been charged and found guilty of abuse of power, and the channeling of RM2.67 billion away from the government-back project and into personal bank accounts.
