Syed Saddiq wants to push for reforms on drug addiction as first time offenders are mainly youths

What you need to know: He said drug addiction should be decriminalised according to stats from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK)

More than 80% of those caught for drug offences consists of Malays between 19 and 39 years old.

By punishing users, they would be negatively affected in the future due to their record even if they try really hard and manage to turn their lives around.

What was done in the past: The idea of decriminalising drug use has been talked about in the past by the Pakatan Harapan government.

They wanted to make it a reality by the end of their term and both the Health and Home Ministries have previously mentioned changing the status of drug addiction.

Who said what: Previous Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that the policy was going to be a “game changer”.

Drug decriminalisation will indeed be a critical next step towards achieving a rational drug policy that puts science and public health before punishment and incarceration.

Also, former Home Minister – and current Prime Minister – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said drug addicts were no longer seen as criminals who must be punished but are patients in need of treatment and rehabilitation.

As of 2019, there are around 70,000 prisoners in Malaysia and most of them were caught for drug-related offences.
