An Election Commission (EC) staff in Sarawak has tested positive for Covid-19, leading to the temporary closure of the office.
Who said what: EC secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak confirmed that the Sarawak office has been closed until 2 August in line with the Health Ministry’s standard operating procedures (SOPs). All staff who had been in close contact are under mandatory 14-days self-quarantine and will undergo Covid-19 testing.
Why it matters: Speculations have been swirling that the Sarawak state election might be carried out this year, as early as September. However, the state has been witnessing a spike in Covid-19 infections this July with as many as 8 new clusters emerging in three weeks. The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has announced that Sarawak is currently facing a second wave of Covid-19 infections.
