The Housing and Local Government Ministry is invested in their enforcement efforts to curb the negative effects of alcohol consumption that they have decided to review the sale of alcoholic beverages in grocery stores throughout the country.
What you need to know: The ministry posed the question in Parliament, citing reasons to review the sale of alcoholic beverages in grocery stores. Currently, sale of alcoholic beverages are subjected to the Customs Act and Excise Act under the jurisdiction of the Customs Department in the Finance Ministry. Now, the Housing and Local Government Ministry wants to review such sales that fall under the Trade, Business, and Industrial Licensing Bylaw, which is issued by the Housing and Local Government Ministry itself.
Who said what: Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Mutalib noted that his ministry has issued instructions for all state governments to identify special premises involved in the sale of alcoholic beverages. He states that this is to heighten enforcement efforts to curb the negative effects of alcohol consumption within the community.
Why it matters: Depending on what the results are after this review, Malaysians may soon find it difficult to purchase alcoholic beverages at grocery stores, supermarkets, and even your local kedai runcit.
