You Might Be Jailed Or Fined If You Refuse To Wear A Mask

People who refuse to wear a face mask may be fined or face jail time once the government has made mask-wearing mandatory in public places.

What you need to know: Health Director-General Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the government is still “looking at the punishment” should they decide to enforce a mandatory mask rule. He also mentioned that the options the government was considering are a fine or jail time.

Dr. Noor Hisham also tweeted on 18 July that the government had never made mask-wearing mandatory previously, but only strongly encouraged the practice.

Why it matters: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin mentioned during his special address on Monday that the government is contemplating on enforcing a mandatory mask rule in public places nationwide.

The statement was made at a time when the country started to experience a double-digit increase in new Covid-19 cases daily, which the Prime Minister said was worrying. This sentiment is echoed by the Health DG as well.

Both the Prime Minister and the Health DG urged Malaysians to continue practise social distancing and wear masks, as both practices can greatly reduce the risk of infection.
