The Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said Water tariff hikes in the Klang Valley are unlikely as the government looks to avoid further stressing the already burdened public due to Covid-19.

This was in reply to Datuk Hasanuddin Mohd Yunos (PH-Hulu Langat) who asked if the government can make sure that water tariffs in the Klang Valley wouldn’t increase after the Langat 2 project is handed over to Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor).

Tuan Ibrahim also told the Parliament that any review of the existing rates will take the interests of all stakeholders into consideration.

However, I want to emphasise that, as the people are still facing the financial burden due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and under pressure to earn a living, the government will not increase the water tariff in this situation.

According to Malay Mail, the water treatment plant will be handed over based on agreement signed in 2014.

As part of the agreement, Air Selangor will pay the lease amount of around RM232 million per year to Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) for 45 years.
