Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has agreed to allow more worshippers to join daily and Friday prayers at mosques and surau in the state.

However, the number of worshippers in a given mosque or surau still depends on the capacity of the premises after observing 1.5m social distancing among the congregation.

According to Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, this allowance includes the surau which has been given special permission to conduct Friday prayers.

Meanwhile, female members of the congregation are still disallowed from praying at mosques unless they do so at Masjid Diraja Tengku Ampuan Jemaah, Bukit Jelutong, and Masjid Diraja Raja Haji Fi Sabilillah, Cyberjaya.

Mohd Shahzihan said that Jais is forming a special committee to monitor standard operating procedures (SOP) are being complied to by worshippers in the mosques and surau.

Stern action will be taken for any non-compliance with the SOP, and JAIS will not hesitate to withdraw the permission in order to protect the safety and well-being of the congregation and image of Islam.

He added that at the moment, the congregation must get registered and wait for their turn to join Friday prayers in the mosques and surau. However, Jais is working on a more efficient system to ease the registration and feedback process on a congregate’s application for participation in Friday prayers.

Mohd Shahzihan also advised worshippers to perform their ablution at home, wear masks, and bring their own prayer mats when joining congregational prayers.
