A senior citizen died of Covid-19 in Kuching last week, which has triggered the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) to conduct mass testing and random contact tracings.

What you need to know: The 72-year-old senior citizen had sought traditional treatment several times before being confirmed positive for Covid-19. He was later taken to a private hospital on July 9, which referred him to the Sarawak General Hospital. On July 10, he was pronounced dead.

Why it matters: Because of how easily Covid-19 transmits, even one freely active infected individual could infect many others. That’s why contact tracing is so crucial to maintain the health of the community. Download the MySejahtera app and register the areas you go to, so in case of an outbreak, you can be notified and quarantined appropriately, especially if you have been in the same areas.

Who said what: JPBM chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas noted that 217 preliminary screenings have been done so far in the Stutong community market area. Out of the total, 2 were found to have symptoms. 56 samples have been taken. Next on the list will be the Green Road fresh market area, while the other main markets will be tested in the next two weeks.
