Almost 200 Tabligh Members Are Stranded In India For Misusing Their Visa

Stranded and detained in India, 189 tabligh members are unable to return to Malaysia due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Who said what: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said that the 189 Malaysian tabligh members stranded in India are in a “critical situation.” He explained that most of the tabligh members have been charged with flouting their social visa pass, detained and some still undergoing court process. The government is currently working to bring home at least 136 tabligh members using a special aircraft on 17th July.

How did it get here: After attending a mass gathering organised by Muslim missionary group Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi in March, Malaysian members wre unable to return due India’s travel restrictions and lockdown to to curb the Covid-19 outbreak. Later, the 190 stranded Malaysians were placed in quarantine and detention centres, while 55 Malaysians were charged with misusing their social visa pass for religious activities by the Indian authorities.
