Sarawak Taekwondo Team Just Won First Place At National Online Tournament

Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and movement control order (MCO), the Sarawak state taekwondo team managed to achieve a unique award when they emerged as champions of the ITF Online Corona Challenge.

The online tournament was organised by the International TaeKwon-Do Federation Malaysia (ITFM) to encourage all members to remain active in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Members participated by sending in their pattern performance videos to the ITFM tournament committee which was then uploaded onto the ITF platform and judged. A total of 79 members from all over Malaysia took part in the competition.

ITF Sarawak, represented by eight black-belt taekwondoin, secured four gold, one silver, and three bronze medals, while Johor and Kuala Lumpur finished second and third place in the online competition held on 14 June.

The team’s gold medalists were Joane Lim from SMK Kuching Town, Joyce Li who is currently waiting for her Form Six results, Gan Kai Zhe from Chung Hua Middle School No. 3 and Donnie Low from AirAsia.

Meanwhile, their silver medalist was Angeline Chai Shu Ping from SMK Batu Lintang and their bronze medalists were Yap Yi Zi from UCSI, Phoebe Wang and Tsi Shi Qi both are waiting for offers from public universities.

Jeffrey Wee (5th Dan) and Master Francis Ting (7th Dan) served as main umpires in the tournament.
