Telekom Malaysia (TM) has upgraded the internet speed of Pitas district in Sabah, where Veveonah Mosibin lives, to help the communities in her village and in the surrounding areas.

Announcing the effort on Facebook, TM said that they were inspired by the fighting spirit and determination shown by Veveonah in her experiences of searching for a stable internet connection to sit for her exams.

They have upgraded Pusat Internet Kampung Pinggan-Pinggan, Pitas with 300Mbps fibre optic connectivity. This internet centre is the one closest to Veveonah’s village and also happens to now be the first in Sabah to enjoy such high internet speeds.

The area is remote and it presents numerous challenges for us in term of providing the physical connectivity and maintenance.

TM shared that the upgrading process was challenging, considering the fact that Pitas is almost 140km from Kota Kinabalu and requires a 3-hour drive that includes off-road vehicles.

However, the company points out that such an improved connectivity will increase opportunities for teachers, students and entrepreneurs in Veveonah’s community, saying that this project is one of the ways they will help bridge the connectivity gap in rural areas.

We’re happy that Veve and her community will be able to benefit from the improved internet connectivity.

Besides that, TM also said that they will continue to explore various methods to connect even more rural communities and invest in infrastructure covering both urban and rural areas.

Veveonah went viral in mid-June for having to camp in a tree for 24 hours just to get an internet connection that was stable enough for her to take her exams.
