2020’s Merdeka Day Parade Is Canceled

With the country still under threat of the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia is canceling 2020’s Merdeka Day parade.
According to Senior Minister (Defense) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the government has no plans on commemorating the nation’s 63rd Independence Day this year, as it would be difficult to maintain social distancing and hygiene practices at such a mass event.
Usually on August 31 every year, Malaysian would gather to witness the annual Merdeka Day parade – currently held at either the historic Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur or the nation’s administrative capital at Putrajaya Square – to celebrate the nation’s freedoms and showcase their patriotic spirits.
The day is normally filled with an assortment of nationalistic and cultural events and performances embodying Malaysia’s colorful multiethnic heritage.
For 2020, the government explained that while the main Merdeka Day parade is off the table, other side programs and activities, such as the raising of the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) would still take place, provided that strict Covid-19 guidelines are adhered to.
The government said that they’ll be making further announcements on the matter once a standard operating procedure (SOP) for Merdeka Day events are finalized.
