Embracing the “new normal” in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, parliament sessions will need to adhere to Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) from now on.

What you need to know: The SOP was approved by a special cabinet ministers’ meeting on the enforcement of Recovery Movement Control Order. Under this SOP, only members of parliament and their respective aides and officers will be allowed to enter the meeting halls. Government officers and journalists will only be allowed into the Parliament building.

The next Dewan Rakyat session is expected to last for 25 days and be from July 13 to August 27.  It will be followed by the Dewan Negara session which will be held from September 2 till September 23 for 11 days.

Who said what: According to Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob who announced the SOP, all those mentioned above will have to follow the procedures before being allowed to enter. This includes registering using the MySejahtera application and being temperature screened among others.

Among the SOPs that were agreed upon include using face masks, hand sanitisers as well as arranging a one-metre social distancing for seating during the parliamentary meetings.
