There’s a possibility for an increase in forced child labour among the poor, undocumented and refugee groups, warned experts.

This is due to families trying to cope with the aftermath of Covid-19.

FMT quoted Bharati Pflug, a Senior Specialist For Fundamental Principles And Rights At Work at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) who listed the types of work that these children would be forced into:

  • pornography
  • drug trafficking
  • debt bondage
  • prostitution
  • hazardous jobs such as working underwater, working for long hours in unhealthy conditions
  • working overnight using dangerous tools.

She said, during the “Covid-19: Protect children from child labour” webinar organised by ILO and Unicef, that the main contributor to this problem is the rising rate of unemployment.
