Malaysia urgently needs to address the issue of mental health problems among children in the country, says social activist and Befrienders patron Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Although Malaysia has been making efforts towards mental illness awareness over the years, Lee said that the subject is still considered taboo in these parts and that our children and youths need to be included in the conversation.
Lee explained that it was important for children to be aware of the importance of mental health and that society, especially parents and school systems, would need to properly educate and equip kids with the necessary skills to manage stress, solve problems and build their resilience and character.
Children go through many constant changes in their upbringing, such as going to a new school, meeting new friends and all these can make them feel stressful or anxious.

Recently, the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS 2019) revealed that the country was faced with a “hidden epidemic” with nearly half a million of our Malaysian youths suffering from mental health problems.
