The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) is allowing solemnisation ceremonies (akad nikah) to be performed in person again starting 22 June 2020.

JAIS director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said in a statement today (18 June) that the decision was made in line with the implementation of the recovery movement control order (RMCO)

However, according to these new standards, solemnisation ceremonies can only be performed at specified mosques or at the district Islamic religious office for selected cases permitted by the senior registrar.

He said that attendees to the ceremonies will be limited to a maximum of 15 individuals; 7 from the groom’s side and eight from the bride’s side. Besides that, other attendees will consist of the bride and groom, the bride’s wali, and two witnesses only.

He said that according to the same standards, all attendees must follow the guidelines set by JAIS, and all assistant registrar of marriages must perform their duties in assisting and facilitating all matters involving the application of a marriage license.

This includes solemnisation ceremonies as stated under Section 7 of the Islamic Family Law Enactment (Selangor) 2003 as soon as the Authorisation For Marriage under Section 17 of the same enactment is issued.
