Previously, it was announced that Malaysians will no longer need to undergo the 14-day quarantine in a hotel when they return from abroad. The quarantine can now be done at home.

Those under quarantine will be given wristbands as an identification method and are also encouraged to download the MySejahtera app to track the Covid-19 outbreak as part of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Malaysians returning home.

These individuals will receive a Monitoring and Surveillance letter from authorities. They will also be given a wristband, which must be worn throughout the monitoring and surveillance period while at home.

They are not allowed to remove the wristband, tamper with, or hide it in any way.

They must wear the wristband for the full 14 days. On the 13th day, they will be screened again at home. If the rest results come back negative, the wristband can be taken off. The wristband is also only allowed to be removed by an officer who has been granted authority to do so, and not by the returnee themselves.

Any person found violating the rules will have action taken against them.

The at-home quarantine is used because only a tiny percentage of returning Malaysians have tested positive. Of over 5,000 returning Malaysians, only 554 (about 10%) tested positive for Covid-19.

Hence, the risk for returning Malaysians are quite low and does not justify the high cost of hotel rooms used for quarantine. The 14-day at-home quarantine is still safe as it adheres to the World Health Organisation guidelines.
