Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is advising the public to refrain from overcrowding a household now that interstate travel is allowed again and many may be considering visiting their relatives.

While responding to questions at the daily press conference on Covid-19 updates in Putrajaya today (13 June 2020), he said that the standard operating procedures (SOP) that allowed a maximum number of 20 individuals per household was made in anticipation for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities which took place during the conditional movement control order on 24 May.

However, now that the country is in its recovery movement control order (RMCO) phase, many of the SOPs which were put in place have been relaxed.

They can now return to their hometowns and visit relatives but the SOP is there, like social distancing and the need to wash and sanitise their hands and the usage of face masks.

In spite of the relaxed SOPs, Ismail urges Malaysians to keep in mind the safe practices espoused by the government during the movement control order (MCO) and continue to apply these practices in their daily lives.

During the Hari Raya festivities, Malaysians were not allowed to travel interstate to visit their hometowns or hold any open houses. Instead, only a maximum of only 20 individuals were permitted to be inside a house.

If it is a small house, a maximum of 20 people is not advised. If possible, try not to have too many people in one house because there is a risk (of getting the virus). We ourselves can decide how to protect ourselves and our family members.

On a separate note, Ismail highlighted that mosques that were allowed to hold Friday prayers have also been in compliance with the SOPs set by the authorities, saying that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) had been monitoring them closely.

I’d like to thank PDRM for monitoring the situation and all mosque committees for complying with the SOP. With such compliance, I believe more mosques and suraus can be allowed to open in the near future.

Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob

He added that a discussion with the Religious Affairs Ministry would be held in order to discuss the possibility of offering more leniency for mosques and suraus across Malaysia to operate.
