Even as economic and social sectors open up during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) from 10th June, Parliament Malaysia announced it will remain closed to the public.

In an announcement on the official Parliament Malaysia website, the Chief Administrator writes that this temporary closure until 31st August is in line with the government’s decision to implement the RMCO.

While the announcement appeared to cause some confusion online, the next parliamentary session from 13th July to 27th August is still on the official schedule.

The July parliamentary session will prove to be an important one for the nation after Pakatan Nasional’s first parliamentary sitting on 18th May went by with only the opening address by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. Health and safety concerns regarding the Covid-19 pandemic was the official reason given for the one-day sitting.

Come the July session, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to table Covid-19 Temporary Measures Bill to minimise the impact of the pandemic.

Critics have said the Covid-19 bill comes a little too late, only three months after the pandemic hit the nation and severely affected the livelihoods of Malaysians.

Many have earlier urged for Parliamentary sessions to go digital to table the necessary bills for mitigating the effects of the global crisis while maintaining social distancing
