In a press statement today, Senior Minister Datuk Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob announced that hair salons, barber shops, nail parlours, facial and beauty centers can reopen on June 10.

However, they will be subjected to strict SOPs and guidelines to resume operations. In the meantime, Malaysians who have grown out their hair can finally get it professionally cut again.

The personal care industry plays a big part in the nation’s economy, contributing around RM13.5 billion a year, employing around 74,500 workers.

The SOPs will have to be put in place for specific services such as the basic hair cut, hair wash, beard and moustache shaving, manicure, pedicure, hair extensions and hair grooming, face washing, and treatment.

Each hairdresser, barber, and beautician must wear face shield, apron, and gloves before attending to each customer. These preventive items must be disposed of properly after.

They must also supply the customer with a disposable apron which can either be thrown away or kept by the customer to reuse at a later date.

High-risk groups such as senior citizens aged 60 and above or children aged 12 and below must have a prior appointment with the hair and beauty salons. During this time, there can be no other customer around while these services are being rendered the high-risk groups.

This is to lower the risk of senior citizens and young children being infected. Salon owners can decide that 10am-12pm is when they do these services for senior citizens and children, for example.

Other than that, the regular SOP of checking for temperature, recording customer’s details, and providing handsanitizer is required as well.
