Athletes competing for the Olympic Games in Tokyo have been granted special permission to resume their training sessions but will have to undergo strict procedures to ensure their safety.

The government has allowed 265 individuals, including 57 athletes to prepare for the quadrennial international tournament which starts on 23 July.

These athletes and personnel will be segregated in three training camps – Bukit Jalil Sports Complex (181 individuals), Malaysian Badminton Academy in Mont Kiara (56 individuals) and the National Sailboat Training Program in Langkawi (26 individuals).

The camps will start training on 1 June until 30 June and during the registration day, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, the personnel will be tested and will only be allowed to proceed if they’re negative.

Those who are found positive will be taken to the hospital for further care.

He said the Ministry of Youth and Sports will be taking the quarantine approach throughout the 30 days where once they’re in these locations, these individuals will not be allowed to go out.

At the end of the month of June, Ismail said the athletes and other personnel will undergo another swab test.

Ismail also said during these training sessions, athletes must adhere to the preventive measures such as social distancing.

The Olympics in Tokyo was slated to begin in 2020 but was postponed to 2021 after the spread of Covid-19 has halted all international sporting events including football’s UEFA Champions League and the French Open, one of the premier events in tennis.
