The Health Director General, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has revealed that around 14% of Malaysia’s Covid-19 cases are linked to interstate travel.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 conference, Dr Noor Hisham revealed that 14.1% of Malaysian Covid-19 cases, or 971 cases of the total 6,894 cases, had a history of interstate travel

Additionally, 18 clusters out of the total 49 clusters previously recorded in Malaysia are also related to cross-border activities. Ten of these clusters are still active.

His statement follows figures provided earlier by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that 508 vehicles who wanted to balik kampung were ordered to turn back at state interstate borders on 15th May, Friday.

The number doubled the next day on Saturday when 1,248 vehicles attempting to cross state lines were instructed to turn back.

We don’t want new clusters to emerge if people from red zones, like Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, travel out of state. There is a huge possibility of them carrying the virus with them. We are concerned that new cases will then emerge in green zones.

He cited Iran as an example, which experienced a spike in Covid-19 cases after citizens returned to their hometowns during the Persian New Year Holiday period in March.

Expressing gratitude to PDRM for their efforts in ensuring compliance with the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), Dr Noor Hisham calls for the public to not abuse the relaxations provided by the government.

He urged Malaysians to strictly adhere to the SOPs (standard operating procedures) in place for Hari Raya Aidilfitri (24th & 25th May). The authorities stipulate that no more than 20 family members are allowed in the house for Hari Raya.

Last week, the Health DG expressed concerns of a second wave of Covid-19 infections in mid-june – just two weeks after Hari Raya.
