Student Out On Assignment Fined RM1,000 For MCO Violation

A 20-year-old student was fined RM1,000 today by the Selayang Magistrate’s Court for violating the Movement Control Order (MCO) on 3rd April.
According to Bernama, the student of a higher institution of learning (IPT) was arrested beside Jalan Tan Sri Lou Chuan, Rawang at 11.30pm. He had gone to his friend’s house that day for an assignment and was caught on his way back.
He was then charged under Regulation 3 (1) Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 for deliberately being present in an area of infection without any logical excuse.
The sentence for this charge is maximum RM1,000 fine, up to 6 months jail time, or both.
M. Mariappan from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), who represented the student, told the court that his client regretted and repented over his action, and pleaded for a minimum sentence.
The student pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced the maximum RM1,000 fine by Magistrate Nik Fadli Nik Azlan.
If he fails to pay the fine, the court ordered that the student be jailed for 3 months.
