Although the country is currently busy battling the Covid-19 pandemic, it seems that love still manages to find a way through all this confusion and uncertain times.

A total of 952 couples in Kedah have just received permission to get married even while the movement control order (MCO) is in place, albeit with a few conditions.

The state’s Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir said that the couples are required to marry at the District Religious offices with minimal attendance. The couples are also not allowed to hold any ceremony except the solemnisation (akad nikah) there.

Besides that, the three witnesses required for the ceremony will be provided by the religious office, while the date and time of the event will be determined by the Kedah State Islamic Religious Affairs Department.

What is being worked out is to allocate a few days a week for the District Religious Office to handle the conventional marriage, but attendance is limited to the couple and each accompanied by a next-of-kin (wali) or a guardian (for the bride) who could give away the bride in accordance with Syariah law.

The couples are advised to register in advance to ease the process of arranging the time and date for the ceremony.

Meanwhile, for solemnisation ceremonies involving those marrying individuals of other nationalities, Mukhriz said the authorities are working on the best initiative for them.

We endeavour to make the video conferencing method work and also see how the other states are using it. We will seek to coordinate it in Kedah to resolve all the problems involved
