The planet’s tech giants are teaming up against a common enemy.

Apple and Google are developing a platform to track and keep tabs on the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The Contact Detection Service is said to utilize Bluetooth technology to perform contact tracing on coronavirus cases across the world.

Contract tracing is essentially a means to identify infected patients as well as the people and areas that have been exposed to a confirmed case to prevent the onward transmission of the disease.

This method is being used by governments, healthcare agencies as well as the public around the globe to track the viral spread and potentially putting an end to the outbreak.

The method has been essential in the fight against deadly diseases like the Ebola epidemic in Africa.

Reportedly, both companies are going across the operating system (OS) divide allowing interoperability of the service between iOS and Android.

Naturally, users would need to agree to some privacy-related terms and conditions in order to use the system that is set to be released in May.

Countries like South Korea and Singapore have developed their own state-run contact tracing applications in order to collect and distribute data regarding the Covid-19 infection for public use.

Though lacking in Bluetooth functionality, Malaysia’s very own MySejahtera App also allows authorities and the public to gain up-to-date information and guidelines on the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
