Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has just announced a further extension of the Movement Control Order (MCO) until 28th April.
While the implementation of MCO Phase 3 is the first takeaway from his announcement, the prime minister also mentioned some pretty important things in his speech.

Muhyiddin thanked the entire nation, especially to the doctors and nurses on the frontlines who boldly put themselves at risk to save the lives of others.
He also expressed gratitude to the police, army, immigration, Fire & Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force and The People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) and local enforcement agencies for braving the sun, wind, rain and virus to help break the chain of infection.

Food delivery riders and generous Malaysians who donated food to frontliners were also thanked for making sure people had something to eat.
In short, we’re like a big family. We help each other out when times are hard. Let’s look after our family. Let’s take care of our neighbors. We take care of our community. Kita jaga kita. This is the true value of Malaysian brotherhood regardless of race.

Covid-19 infection & transmission significantly reduced since MCO implementation
With the efforts of the Health Ministry and MCO, Malaysia’s Covid-19 cases are under control at 7%, below the 10% benchmark set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Malaysia’s death rate from this outbreak is also low at 1.6% compared to the global mortality rate of 5.8%.
Besides that, around 42% of the nation’s Covid-19 patients have recovered with 1,830 patients discharged to date.
But, this isn’t going to end anytime soon
WHO has advised nations to not lift their movement control restrictions too soon as the outbreak spiked in countries that lifted their social distancing measures.
What I want to mention here is that we must be prepared to face it with this situation for a relatively longer period of time. It may take several months before we can be sure the outbreak is 100% over.

As long as the virus poses a threat, social distancing must continue. This is the new normal, possibly for months or even years.

Schools postponed & home-based learning for students
School sessions may be postponed until the government is really sure things are on the mend.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry will implement home-based learning initiatives throughout the MCO period, and possibly for the following duration until schools open again.
Increased border security to prevent illegal entry
The Chief of Police, Commander of the Armed Forces, Chief Director of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Immigration, RELA and other relevant agencies will tighten controls along the country’s borders to prevent illegal entry of individuals who may bring the virus in.
More business sectors & industries allowed to operate
A number of selected economic sectors will be reopened gradually with health guidelines and strict movement control.
A special cabinet committee chaired by the International Trade and Industry Senior Minister and Defense Minister will examine the list of selected economic sectors to open in stages.
The opening of some of these sectors does not mean loosening of the MCO restrictions. If there is an operator, factory or company that violates the rules, the government will retract their permit to operate.
The list of sectors will be announced by the government in the near future.
