Covid-19 continues to smash through society as UK Prime Minister Boris Jonshon is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Initially diagnosed with Covid-19 on 27th March, he said at the time that he had “mild symptoms” including a fever and “a persistent cough.”

But things seem to have taken a turn for the worse as the 55-year-old was sent to the hospital on Sunday (5th April) for testing, on the advice of his doctor.

Yesterday (6th April) Boris Johnson was moved to the ICU. According to BBC, his condition worsened over the course of Monday afternoon and he was moved into intensive care on the advice of his medical team.

He was put on oxygen before ICU and not put on a ventilator yet.

BBC reports that the prime minister is still conscious and his transfer to the ICU is a precautionary measure in case he needs ventilation.

Earlier that day, Boris Johnson had tweeted out that he was in good spirits.

Known for his nonchalant attitude towards the coronavirus (and many things in general), the news comes as a shock for the nation.

In fact, weeks before he was diagnosed with Covid-19, Boris Johnson was boasting about shaking hands with everybody in a hospital. He justified his actions by pointing out that people should wash their hands, which he assured he did.

I was in the hospital the other night where there were coronavirus patients. I shook hands with everybody, you’d be pleased to know. And I continue to shake hands

As the prime minister continues his battle, the UK’s first secretary of state Dominic Raab will stand in.

Based on the numbers by Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Centre, the UK has the 8th highest number of Covid-19 cases at 52,279.
