A politician triggered Twitterjaya into a frenzy yesterday (August 23) when he shared photos of our Jalur Gemilang being hung upside down and burnt.

Malaysians came together to call the post out for being misleading.

It turns out, the picture of a man burning Jalur Gemilang is an old photo circa 2013 taken in another country. What’s more, the man in the photo wasn’t a Malaysian either.

Following the incident, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has released a statement advising the public to stop circulating and sharing any pictures of videos of the Jalur Gemilang being hung upside down.

MCMC has also urged citizens to stop bringing up any old pictures or videos of incidents that may possibly instigate anger and racial conflict.

On top of that, MCMC advises internet users to be more aware of what they are accessing online and to refrain from using social media as a platform to propagate fake, offensive and derogatory content.
