After 5 hours in surgery, baby Ainul’s cancerous facial tumour is successfully removed!

Good news, everyone! Baby Ainul successfully undergone surgery in a London private hospital to remove a cancerous tumour that was growing inside her mouth.

It took a team of surgeons and anaesthetists 5 hours to remove the 200g tumour which engulfed her entire mouth.

The medical team was led by Professor David Dunaway,
consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon and head of the Craniofacial Unit
of the hospital and included Malaysian Dr Juling Ong, a Craniofacial and

Dr Amalina Che Bakri, a trainee surgeon at the UK National Health Service (NHS) who made headlines for scoring a record 17 A’s in the 2004 SPM examinations, was also present in the operation theatre.

One of the key figures in arranging for baby Ainul’s journey to London, she shared her experience with an especially touching post on Instagram.

When I stepped out from theatre and saw Ainul’s parents, I couldn’t control my emotions. It was a mixed feeling, such an emotional journey and an uplifting experience at the same time. Ainul, Wani and Safi are like my own family. Let’s pray for Ainul’s recovery. Thank you for all your prayers.

Alhamdulillah, Ainul, you’re strong baby girl! 😭 After about 5 hours of battling in theatre, the tumour (weigh 200g) was successfully removed. You could not imagine how anxious I was, whilst in theatre. Such a tiny baby, so delicate, so beautiful — “don’t worry baby, everyone is here to help you”. Because it was such a high risk operation, a lot of preparations needed to be done before the operation to ensure that baby Ainul was safe. A lot of planning, a lot of scans, a lot of meetings and a lot of patience. The team included surgeons from various specialties (including craniofacial, plastics and head and neck consultants) led by Prof David Dunway and Mr Juling Ong. I was very honoured to be part of the surgical team. Ainul is currently being monitored post-operatively and she’s stable. When I stepped out from theatre and saw Ainul’s parents, I couldn’t control my emotions. It was a mixed feeling, such an emotional journey and an uplifting experience at the same time. New Straits Times reports that the operation went well and that baby Ainul was stable throughout the intense procedure.

Born with the cancer, Ainul Mardhiah received treatment in Hopital Melaka. She had a previous growth removed and underwent chemotherapy but the tumour returned nonetheless.

Her story which received wide media coverage pulled at the heartstrings of Malaysians who came together to raise money for the expensive and complicated surgery.

The wee baby is currently recovering in Intensive Care and will be monitored over the next few weeks for any signs of regrowth.

Baby Ainul’s journey is a fine example of how Malaysians can come together to make something good happen. We wish her a speedy recovery and send our thoughts and prayers to her family.
