21 people were injured after the Teluk Bahang ferry collided with oil tanker MV Mekar Jaya within Penang Port limits on Tuesday night (1 September).
The incident occurred at around 8.40pm, when MV Mekar Jaya, travelling from Butterworth Deep Water Wharf (DADB) towards Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, collided with the ferry as it headed towards Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim.
All 21 injured passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment, said Penang Port Commission (SPPP) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.
He added that ferry services continue to operate normally, and that the commission is committed to ensuring affected passengers receive the necessary follow-up support.
According to The Star, a 23-year-old passenger Aimi, who sat at the rear of the ferry, suffered a leg injury after the collision impact threw her backwards.
Another passenger, Azizarah, 48, said her 12-year-old son Kafa noticed the vessel crossing in front of the ferry moments before the collision. She described being frightened and fearing the ferry would sink.
