Motorists using unsubsidised fuel will have to pay slightly more this week following a slight increase in retail fuel prices amid continued uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
For the pricing period from July 16 to July 22, the retail price of unsubsidised RON95 has increased by five sen to RM3.42 per litre, while unsubsidised diesel in Peninsular Malaysia has gone up 10 sen to RM4.07 per litre.
The retail price of RON97 remains unchanged at RM4.00 per litre.
Meanwhile, motorists eligible under the BUDI95 subsidy programme will continue to enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre, with no change to the subsidised rate.
The latest adjustment comes as global energy markets continue to monitor developments around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes, where geopolitical tensions have contributed to heightened uncertainty over crude oil supply.
The fuel price revision also comes just days after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defended Malaysia’s fuel subsidy policy during Prime Minister’s Question Time in Parliament.
Responding to Hulu Terengganu MP Datuk Rosol Wahid, Anwar said Malaysia continues to offer cheaper RON95 fuel than even major oil-producing Saudi Arabia.
He acknowledged that Pakatan Harapan had previously campaigned for lower fuel prices, noting that Saudi Arabia once offered cheaper petrol, although the situation has since changed.
“This is a fact. You can spin it how you want but the fact remains that our petrol price is cheaper. Yes we asked for petrol price to be reduced then but at the time the price in Saudi was 50 sen (per litre). Now our price is RM1.99 per litre while it’s over RM2.40 in Saudi Arabia,” Anwar was quoted as saying by Malay Mail.
