It may have been designed to represent the future, but many Malaysians are not buying into it.

The official mascot for the 2027 SEA Games, Tuah, has come under heavy criticism on social media, with many netizens questioning its futuristic appearance and speculating that it was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

The modern-looking mascot was unveiled during the launch of the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games branding at IOI City Mall in Putrajaya on Monday.

While organisers described Tuah as a symbol of determination and progress, online reaction was far less enthusiastic, with many users criticising the design as uninspired and lacking originality.

Netizens also wondered why the organisers overlooked homegrown animation powerhouses Monsta and Les’ Copaque, whose globally recognised creations have helped put Malaysia’s animation industry on the world map.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohamed Taufiq Johari said the name “Tuah” was chosen to reflect success, excellence and good fortune achieved through hard work, discipline, perseverance, loyalty and unity.

“Tuah embodies the values that define not only sporting excellence but also the spirit of Malaysia and ASEAN,” he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani during the launch.

At the same event, the ministry also unveiled the official theme for the 2027 Games — “Raikan Perpaduan” (Celebrating Unity).

According to the ministry, the theme reflects Malaysia’s belief that unity remains the nation’s greatest strength while also symbolising the collective spirit shared by ASEAN member states.

The official logo was also introduced, featuring elements intended to represent Malaysia’s aspiration to unite Southeast Asia through sport.

Mohamed Taufiq said the theme goes beyond branding, describing it as a call for athletes to push beyond their limits in pursuit of excellence.

“It reflects a resilient spirit of unity and represents the future of regional sports. At the same time, it serves as an inspiration for athletes to surpass their own expectations in achieving success,” he said.
