DAP Threatens To Quit Melaka Government Over Proposed Appointed Assemblymen Law

The party says it will withdraw from the Melaka state administration if the state assembly approves a constitutional amendment allowing the appointment of up to seven unelected assemblymen.

DAP has threatened to pull out of the Melaka state government if the Melaka State Legislative Assembly approves a constitutional amendment to allow the appointment of up to seven appointed state assemblymen.

The party announced its decision during a special press conference led by Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong, describing the proposed amendment as a move it could not support.

If the amendment is passed, DAP said all four of its representatives in the Melaka executive council would resign from the state administration, reported Berita Harian.

They are Kesidang assemblyman and State Executive Councillor for Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Allex Seah Shoo Chin; Ayer Keroh assemblyman and Melaka Deputy Speaker Kerk Chee Yee; as well as Deputy Executive Councillors Low Chee Leong (Kota Laksamana) and Leng Chau Yen (Banda Hilir).

Beyond the executive council, DAP said it would also withdraw all of its representatives serving in the state administration, including local council members and directors appointed to state government-linked companies (GLCs), as a sign of protest against the proposed constitutional amendment.

Under the proposed amendment, the Melaka Constitution would be revised to empower the state government to appoint as many as seven unelected assemblymen.

The Bill, titled the Constitution of the State of Melaka (Amendment) Enactment 2026, is scheduled to be tabled by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh during the second day of the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly today.

The debate, winding-up session and vote on the proposed amendment are expected to take place later today.

At present, Barisan Nasional holds 20 seats in the 28-member Melaka State Legislative Assembly, while Pakatan Harapan has five seats and Perikatan Nasional holds the remaining three.
