Death is inevitable. No matter how much we try to avoid it, it remains one certainty none of us can escape.
But what if you could find out the most likely cause of your death?
You don’t need to look further – our very own Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) actually owns a death calculator, sort off.
It is convenient enough to use but would you be brave enough to find out how you die?
Try it here – https://kalkulator.dosm.gov.my/cod/

Truth is, the calculator doesn’t spit out just anything to you. It actually uses historical mortality data to estimate the most likely cause of death based on a user’s age, gender and demographic profile.
Users simply key in a few basic details and the calculator generates the diseases or conditions that statistically account for the highest number of deaths among people with similar characteristics, using data collected between 2000 and 2023.
In other words, it is less about predicting an individual’s fate and more about illustrating the health risks faced by people in the same demographic group.
For example, a man approaching his 40s may find ischaemic heart disease listed as the leading cause of death. A slightly younger woman would learn that she may die from Pneumonia.
The initiative also showcases DOSM’s growing efforts to make official data more accessible and engaging for the public.
After all, if there’s one thing the department excels at, it’s turning almost every aspect of daily life into meaningful statistics.
