LRT commuters on the Kelana Jaya Line experienced a mild shock when something described as a “small explosion” occurred near the train carriage at the Taman Jaya station yesterday (30 June).

The incident, which happened at 7.18pm, prompted the train to be pulled from service. No injuries were reported and operations continued as usual, according to a statement by Rapid KL today (1 July).

Rapid KL says a stray wire is what caused the loud sound

In its statement, the train operator said a thin stray wire got caught in the Kelana Jaya Line’s power supply system, which was what caused a spark and a loud “explosive” sound.

As a safety precaution, the train was immediately taken out of service and passengers were safely disembarked at the next station before continuing their journeys on a different train.

Inspections found no damage to the train or its components, and checks on the track between the Universiti and Taman Jaya stations also found the infrastructure to be in good condition.

Rapid KL said investigators found a thin wire, which was not part of the train or the railway infrastructure, had melted at the scene.

“The wire is believed to have become entangled with the power supply system, causing the small explosion-like sound,” the operator said.

Video of the incident went viral on social media

A Malaysian commuter managed to record footage of the incident, which went viral on social media.

The video drew criticism from the public on safety and technical issues that have plagued the Kelana Jaya Line, while others who were on the scene recounted their experience.

“Explosions, abrupt braking that caused people to fall, passengers sustaining wounds from glass panels that break. Legal action can be taken on these incidents. Safety negligence,” one Threads user commented.

“The explosive sound was so loud it was so scary. And people on the platform were screaming. I immediately exited the train because I was scared and tired,” another user commented.
