Social media influencer Caprice had a brief slip of the tongue when he mistakenly asked why “Parliament” had been dissolved during a street interview, only to be promptly corrected by a Barisan Nasional (BN) supporter, who reminded him that it was the Johor State Legislative Assembly—not Parliament—that had been dissolved as the state’s mandate was nearing its end.
The exchange took place during one of Caprice’s interviews with members of the public ahead of the Johor state election.
When asked about the federal government’s allocation to Johor under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, Caprice highlighted that the state had received the highest allocation in its history, amounting to RM14.6 billion.
The unidentified BN supported however argued that Johor’s economy had continued to grow under caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, saying the state government had channelled the benefits of that growth back to the people through various assistance programmes.
“Johor has become more developed under the current state government led by the Menteri Besar. We are progressing steadily, so why would we want to change? We should defend the Johor state government.
“The assistance being provided now comes from the state’s economic gains and is being returned to the people of Johor.
“This is not an election gimmick. The Johor government will continue providing such assistance,” she said.
Asked whether BN had governed well, she replied simply: “The best.”
Caprice then asked why elections were being held if BN had been performing well, mistakenly referring to the dissolution of Parliament.
“There was no dissolution of Parliament. Its term isn’t over yet,” the supporter responded before Caprice clarified that he was referring to the state election.
She explained that Johor’s state government’s term was nearing its constitutional end, making an election necessary to return the mandate to the people.
“The government has served for four years.”
The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved almost a year ahead of schedule, with the 16th Johor state election set to be held on July 11.
Onn Hafiz said the first quarter of 2027 would coincide with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year festive seasons, adding that Johor is also frequently affected by floods at the beginning of the year, making the current window the most appropriate time to hold the election.
