The controversy involving the alleged obstruction of caretaker Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi from entering a Felda area stems from the lack of clarity within the Unity Government coalition, says senior Johor Umno leader Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Nur Jazlan said the confusion reflected deeper issues within the coalition cooperation framework, which he claimed had both positive and negative dimensions but was currently being misunderstood and inconsistently applied.
The Dewan Negara deputy president and Umno Supreme Council Leader member said that recent developments in Johor, particularly in relation to the state political landscape, have made it increasingly clear that the arrangement between coalition partners requires clearer direction.
Nur Jazlan also expressed hope the result of the upcoming Johor state election would produce a clearer mandate.
“Let the outcome be clear. I hope the government in Johor will be a strong one, ideally aligned with Barisan Nasional (BN),” Nur Jazlan told TRP when contacted.
He further reiterated that the situation highlighted two key concerns: what he described as ambiguity within the unity framework, and the need for a clearer electoral outcome that would strengthen political stability in the state.
Johor BN is set to contest the upcoming state election independently, fielding candidates in all 56 state seats while ruling out any formal seat-sharing arrangement or cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) at the state level, despite both coalitions being partners in the federal Madani government.
Johor BN is adamant about ruling the state independently, as it won 40 out 56 seats contested in the last Johor 2022 State Election, forming the state government with over two-third majority.
The Johor state election is set to take place on July 11, with the nomination day slated this Saturday.
Nur Jazlan was commenting on the situation that saw Onn Hafiz claiming that he was barred from entering a Felda settlement to present land titles to settlers.
Onn Hafiz was supposed to hand over land titles to Felda settlers at Felda Ulu Belitong in Kluang on June 20 and 21 in conjunction with Johor Felda Settlers’ Day 2026.
However, due to the alleged restrictions, the celebration was relocated to Dewan Dato’ Onn in Taman Sri Lambak.
“For the first time in my life in Johor, a menteri besar is not allowed into a felda area,” Onn Hafiz was quoted as saying by New Straits Times, when speaking at the Felda settlers land title presentation ceremony.
However, earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied claims that he issued any directive or restriction preventing Onn Hafiz from entering Felda areas, reported Malay Mail Online.
