Malaysian Tourists Slammed For Recording Themselves Mocking Locals In China And Posting Videos Online

Malaysians are generally a sensible bunch. But every now and then, someone does something so embarrassingly tone-deaf that even fellow Malaysians collectively go, “Please don’t represent us.”

That appears to be the case with a group of Malaysian tourists who are currently being roasted on social media after videos emerged showing them loudly mocking locals while travelling in China.

In the clips, several women could be heard making derogatory remarks about Chinese people, with one even questioning how locals clean up after using the toilet.

As if that wasn’t cringeworthy enough, the group delivered their commentary at full volume and openly acted out exaggerated gestures suggesting they were trying to block out unpleasant smells — all while surrounded by members of the public.

To be fair, the original uploader, @ekyn.wong, has since taken down the controversial clip. Her TikTok page also features videos of her and her friends immersing themselves in local culture and enjoying their time with residents. However, perhaps unsurprisingly, the comment section on her account has been switched off.

Needless to say, the videos have left many Malaysians unimpressed.

After all, basic manners and respect for others are values most Malaysians are taught from a young age, regardless of race or religion. Travelling abroad is supposed to broaden horizons, not provide an opportunity to belittle people in their own country.

But perhaps the most baffling part of the entire episode is that the group apparently thought recording and uploading their own behaviour onto social media was a good idea.

Because if you voluntarily document yourself behaving badly and post it for the world to see, you really shouldn’t be surprised when the internet responds accordingly.

Judging by the reactions on Threads, many Malaysians seem united on one thing: the women in the video do not represent the values or manners that the country prides itself on.
