Remember former Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin? Well, he is no longer the former Opposition Leader after being announced as the man who will once again head the opposition bloc and, yes, do what opposition leaders are supposed to do — oppose.
The announcement was made by the political patriarch of the Larut MP, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who is also PAS president and Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman — a development that Bersatu leaders have described as evidence of a growing “mullah” or theocratic style of leadership within the coalition, Malaysiakini reported.
Abdul Hadi made the surprise announcement during the Reset Convention in Tanah Merah on Saturday, with PN chairman and incumbent Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar seated beside him.
The move effectively made the Terengganu Menteri Besar the shortest-serving Opposition Leader in Malaysian political history, having never made it to Parliament in the role.
For the record, Ahmad Samsuri was appointed on May 16 after months of speculation surrounding the position following Hamzah’s dismissal from Bersatu in February for allegedly breaching party discipline.
Earlier on Saturday, Hamzah unveiled his new political vehicle — Parti Wawasan Negara, or simply Wawasan — which he said was inspired by Abdul Hadi himself.
The party is expected to hold its maiden annual general assembly this week.
Hamzah is believed to enjoy the backing of 18 MPs, comprising those who were expelled and several who remain within Bersatu.
Meanwhile, the war of words within the Madani government bloc continued, with DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and Johor Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi exchanging less-than-friendly remarks.
Loke, who is also the Seremban MP, extended yet another invitation to Onn to attend Tuesday’s launch of the KTM Komuter Selatan service in Kulai.
The invitation came after Onn, who is currently serving as Johor caretaker Menteri Besar, revealed that no formal invitation had been sent to his office by Loke’s ministry.
Onn further claimed that the state government had similarly been left out of several previous transport-related programmes in Johor, including visits involving the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and the ETS Segamat project.
