The first Madani Mart has opened in Kuantan today. Madani Mart is a government-initiated effort to provide quality essential groceries at highly affordable prices.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living, Fuziah Salleh, shared that the government is planning to establish Madani Mart as one of the strategic measures to help alleviate rising living costs.

Madani Mart can be found in rural and semi-urban areas. Based on the official website, the plan is to open at least 640 Madani Marts nationwide.

Fuziah said the initiative also welcomes budding entrepreneurs to join and open a Madani Mart to serve their communities.

To date, the government has introduced various initiatives and subsidies for the public. Those include:

  • Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR) to help lower-income groups.
  • SARA aid to help with basic necessities.
  • Payung Rahmah initiative, which includes Menu Rahmah and Jualan Rahmah Madani, offering affordable food and discounted essential goods.
  • Budi Madani subsidy programme to help keep fuel costs manageable.

If you’ve read all that and think Madani Mart sounds like Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia, yes, it’s similar. Some netizens have been quick to point out that the government is damned if it does and damned if it doesn’t.

One person suggested keeping things simple by giving initiatives like these a single, unified name. Something like ”Malaysia Mart” would be easy to remember. Beyond branding, they argued these initiatives should outlast any administration and remain a reliable fixture for the public.
