The government recently announced that the MyDigital ID application will be the sole sign-in platform for Malaysians accessing the National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe) application, effective 15 January.
According to a statement dated 6 January, the Home Ministry (KDN) said that foreign travellers will continue to use the existing login method for the MyNIISe app without any changes.
It stated that the MyNIISe program, which intends to securely and accurately authenticate user IDs through the National Registration Department database without retaining users’ personal data, includes the installation of MyDigital ID as a single sign-on system.
“This approach enhances the security of digital transactions while improving user experience through a single login, eliminating the need to remember multiple passwords,” the ministry said.
It also encouraged Malaysians aged 18 and above to download and register the MyDigital ID application, available on the Apple App Store, Google Play and Huawei AppGallery, before using MyNIISe.
So what are MyDigital ID and MyNIISe and why are they being integrated?
MyDigital ID
The MyDigital ID application was implemented as a single sign-on system as part of the MyNIISe initiative, which aims to verify user identities accurately and securely through the National Registration Department (JPN) database without storing personal data of users.
Think of it as your MyKad, except that it is used on smartphones and online services. Keep in mind though, that MyDigital ID does not replace your physical MyKad so you still need to keep it on you at all times.
You will be using it for:
- Secure online login (Single Sign-On) – Instead of remembering lots of usernames and passwords for government services like MyJPJ, MyNIISe and tax systems, you use one digital ID to log in.
- Verify your identity safely online – It checks your identity with the government database each time you access a service, so the service can trust it’s really you.
- Makes things easier and faster – You won’t need to fill out forms or upload identity documents every time, and many services are linked to your digital ID once you’re registered.
The system is designed to be secure and trusted as it only verifies your identity without storing lots of your personal data on its own servers.
MyNIISe
MyNIISe on the other hand, is a digital immigration system created by the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM). The system helps you go through immigration faster and more smoothly when you enter or leave Malaysia.
Instead of waiting in long queues for passport stamping, you can generate a personal QR code in the app before arriving at the checkpoint, scan the code at kiosks or eGates at airports and border checkpoints, and the system reads your identity as well as your travel details to speed up processing in seconds.
Sounds much faster than an immigration officer having to check your documents and stamping them, yes?
Previously, you would need to enter a password to log into MyNIISe but beginning on 15 January, all you will need is the MyDigital ID app to be able to log in to the immigration app.
The MyNIISe application was introduced on 22 September last year at the Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Bahru, Johor, and will be expanded in stages to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2, as well as to Bayan Lepas, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu airports.
