It’s hard to earn money and you’ve worked hard for your money, so don’t give it all away to scammers!
The Royal Malaysia Police’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) recently advised everyone not to say anything, even ‘’Hello,’’ when answering calls from unknown numbers.
This is because it’s a way for scammers to record your voice and collect voice metadata to confirm your number is still active before attempting to scam you or people you know.
It takes as little as 3 to 5 seconds for scammers to record your voice and use that to deceive your friends and family for money.
The police remind the public that silent calls are not normal nuisances but decoys to identify prey.
Here are some tips to prevent yourself from getting scammed, as recommended by the police:
- Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers immediately. If you do answer the call, don’t say anything but let the other party speak first.
- If possible, you can get clarification from the unknown number through WhatsApp messages first.
- Once you’re sure it’s someone you know, then you can start speaking.
What can you do if you think you’ve been scammed?
If you think you’ve been a victim of a scam, call the bank hotline to stop the suspicious transaction immediately.
Next, you should call the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) at 997 to make a report.
You should then make a police report so further action can be taken.
